FALL 2008 METAL ARTS WORKSHOPS

Power Hammer Die Workshop with Fred Crist: October 16-19 , 2008

*NEW DATES*

This workshop will deal with the power hammer and its use in tool making for simple dies for decorative marking and stamping. We will make dies out of mild steel which will have a short life span, but only usually require a one job use. Once the dies are made we will explore a variety of applications. If time is available we will cover forging spring dies for decorative elements. Participants should come with sketch books and an open mind for new exploration.

Fred Crist’s remarkably original work was recently featured on the cover of the Anvil’s Ring. His previous class at the Center for Metal Arts was a challenging combination of experimentation and breakout techniques.

Forging with Uri Hofi: December 1-12, 2008

Two weeks of workshops with Uri Hofi, the internationally known blacksmith educator whose ergonomic approach to tooling and technique has spread across the blacksmithing world. Short and full-week workshops to be determined.

A student review: “This past week was the best class I have ever had the privilege of taking.  The experience of being involved with not only great friends but also with a great teacher and master blacksmith Uri Hofi will be one I will always remember. Master Hofi at all times kept us on our toes with not only his wit and knowledge of blacksmithing, but also life.

Mr. Hofi is a true teacher in all sense of the word; from the time we started early in the morning to late at night, he kept my blood flowing to a very high level.  Uri gave freely of his knowledge and wisdom.  His passionate and vivid method of teaching is a breath of fresh air.  Being past president of the Florida chapter of NOMMA and a member of ABANA and FABA, I would highly recommend taking a class at The Center for the Metal Arts at Fine Architectural Metalsmiths.”
