Foldforming +Synclastic & Anticlastic Forming
Take foldforming to a new level by combining with synclastic and anticlastic forming. Synclasting creates domed forms, such as spheres. An example of an anticlastic form is a saddle. Cynthia Eid co-authored the recently published book, Creative Metal Forming which fully explores synclastic and anticlastic forming. Her work is featured in Charles Lewton-Brain’s seminal book, Foldforming.
Combine forming techniques to create light, strong, complex, three-dimensional jewelry, hollowware, and sculptures. For the sake of time, students are encouraged to work small during the workshop.
Cynthia uses a combination of lecture, demo and hands-on practice time in her workshops, and is known for encouraging spontaneity, creativity and innovation. This workshop is appropriate for students with basic fold forming experience.

Whether using hand-made mallets and stakes, or the latest hydraulic press tools, Cynthia’s focus is on exploring the fluidity with which metal can be moved, formed, and joined. Cynthia Eid's metalwork has won awards for creativity and design, has been featured in many publications, and exhibited internationally. With both a BS and MFA in Jewelry and Design, she has worked as a bench jeweler for fine goldsmiths, modelmaker in a gold jewelry factory, and on private commissions. Her work is in museums in the US and UK. Cynthia Eid has taught workshops in the US, Canada, Europe, and Australia.
Cynthia has been foldforming since 1996, and her work is featured in Charles Lewton-Brain’s book. In 2000, Lewton-Brain awarded her folded neckpiece the Fold Forming Award for Metalsmithing in the New Millennium.
Her recently published book Creative Metal Forming, co-authored with Betty Helen Longhi, has received rave reviews. The 256-page book includes over 700 photos, and covers a huge swath, from a dapped disc, to how to hammer, through synclasting, anticlasting, spiculums, and raising a vessel. 35 detailed exercises explain the basics, as well as advanced, nuances for each technique. In his foreword for the book, Michael Good says the authors "have succeeded in assembling the first comprehensive textbook on synclastic and anticlastic forming.”
